Hoodie Allen: Frat Rap or....

Hoodie Allen is has continuously been criticized into being just like the one hit wonder Asher Roth. Some critics even say he is talentless and his lyrics have no point. In the beginning of Hoodie’s career, his first album made it easy for him to be categorized under the frat rap genre. His lyrics just like many of the other artists under this genre were superficial. As he kept creating albums though his songs grew more depth. A perfect example of this would be his song You’re a Robot, where his lyrics are way too similar to most common lyrics used between the frat rap genre artists. In his first album he is not his own person but he is trying to find his way in to the music industry. Now in his new album there is one song in particular that shows you the depth he has started to have in his music, People Keep Talking he sings, “I’ve always been way above the average, that’s why no one else can compare to me, other rappers don’t offend me.” He then keeps on to explain why he is different and how his life is even different from theirs. Hoodie Allen has gone above and beyond in the music industry trying to get his name out there. With all that being said, Hoodie Allen does not fit under the frat rap genre. Since recently becoming a fan of his I noticed his passion growing as he progressed in his different albums. Hoodie’s music seems to just be completely different to me. It’s not only because of his lyrics but also the beats he uses in his songs, I can’t really figure out how to describe it but it just isn’t a typical beat for most music I’ve heard from other frap rappers.
